Influential Books by Women about Women

This is a list of books that are about as far from chic-lit as you can get. Ground-breaking provocative and ultimately influential books by women that advanced or emancipated womankind in some way shape or form, be it politically, socially, emotionally or in some other way.
The first one is by an incredible woman for her time,Mary Wollstonecraft. She wrote“A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, in1792.Wollstonecraft argued that women deserved to be in the public sphere which was a provocative, and to most men, alarming prospect. She was a tireless campaigner for women to be included in many areas of what were then traditionally male preserves. In the 18th Century, the very notion of educating a woman was considered radical, so one can imagine the waves her book created when published (and the enemies she created for herself). Probably the first book calling for forms of female emancipation.
One book we all have probably read is“Pride & Prejudice”, by Jane Austen, published in 1813. England in this period had just come out of the Napoleonic wars, born out of revolution, and was in no mood to start interfering with the “right” order and hierarchy of things or give poorer people or women more power. Austen’s book was not a direct attack on the system or a rabble-rousing call for change. It was a clever and subtle satirising of class-based snobbery; a side-swipe at some of the accepted mores of the time encased in a very readable and enjoyable novel.
No book list would be complete without one by Virginia Woolf. In “A Room of One’s Own” published in 1929 she espoused the notion that “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”. It may seem innocuous these days, but that statement and others in her books were a cry for women to have creative and financial freedom and became a rallying cry for mid-20th century feminist intellectuals
Moving to post WW2, we have “The Second Sex” by Simone de Beauvoir (1949). It is now consideredthe book that launched a second and more “pushy” wave of feminism. De Beauvoir drew facts and examples from various disciplines to argue and explain the subordinate status of women throughout history, and the need for it to change. It was so controversial that it was placed on the Vatican’s index of forbidden books. A badge of honour!
“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou, published in 1969) was her first autobiography and covered her youth and teenage years, and includes recounting of rape, teen pregnancy, and racism. Powerful and moving it raised consciousness of these issues and inspired many subsequent women writers.
“The White Album” by Joan Didion (1979) is a collection of essays and stories. She catalogues her nervous breakdown in the opening essay, but she also takes on the women’s movement, Georgia O’Keefe, and the then president of the US, Ronald Reagan. Powerful and provocative. Essential reading.
Finally a more recent book; “The Conflict”, penned by Elisabeth Badinter in 2012. She believes that the trend of naturalism in motherhood—years of breastfeeding, co-sleeping and baby wearing—is just a modern and stylish way to keep women down. Controversial and forthright, many women see her as the bête noir of modern feminism, others as a saviour of radical feminism.

“Missy” Rayder: Top Health and Beauty Tips

There’s no doubt that, to use a blokish term, one of the “fittest” supermodels around is Melissa Rayder. Melissa “Missy” Rayder (born June 21, 1978) is a much-sought-after fashion model from the United States. She is the younger sister of another model Francisca “Frankie” Rayder. Missy has had (and continues to have) a successful career in modelling which included appearances on several leading high fashion magazines such Vogue Italia, Vogue España, and Elle France.
Perhaps a little surprisingly Missy says she doesn’t “do” gyms. However that is more than compensated for by the fact that she has a busy physical lifestyle. She is not a couch potato or desk-bound and also has a young son. That means she’s on the move all the time. She tends to get a little stressed at airports which can burn up the calories, although we wouldn’t really recommend that you follow suit. She also walks, rather than hail taxis, in cities she knows like New York. We are not talking just a block or two here, but up to five miles! Her son also helps Missy’s arms get toned. She carries him rather than use prams or buggies- that’s a 35 pound workout for biceps and triceps!
Missy advises that you should not get obsessive about any particular part of your body or looks that you don’t like, and spend time effort and money in trying to remedy what you may see as a defect. We are all made different, so see it as a personal and exclusive badge on your body that makes you exclusive and distinguishable from other people! You’ve probably guessed by now that Missy has no time for surgery, plastic or otherwise.
When it comes to food, Missy eats healthily, but avoids “fad” diets. She prefers organic food because it has fewer chemicals in it. In fact she makes regular trips (walking of course!) to a New York place called Protima Spa where all their products are completely organic. She prefers green tea to coffee, and this seems to still give her energy and zest, while avoiding caffeine and tannins.
So pulling that all together Missy is a person who eats sensibly, and does a certain amount of exercise, and has managed to still look naturally healthy. I wonder whether her gentle regime would work for anyone else or is it just she has a metabolism that works with her programme?
I don’t know the answer to that, but it’s worth a try isn’t it? In the meantime just like the Spring/Summer 2014 campaign, Agent Provocateur‘s stunning Fall/Winter 2014 products and imagery is being promoted by Missy. The latest catalogue and videos shows a homage to and emulation of the hedonism of 1970s Parisian nightlife.Missy is ideal for the range- she’s no fresh-out-of-school immature wannabe starlet but instead shows how an older lady can still set pulses racing with a spirit of languid vice and carefree luxury. You can see Missy enjoying a bottle of champagne, playing with a deck of cards and putting golf balls while sporting some of the greatest (and most provocative) underwear and accessories around.

Blaze a Trail with a Blazer!

There was a time when the only people who wore blazers were either entertainments officers on cruise liners, door-to-door cold-call salesmen or dodgy second-hand car salesmen with a cravat. But what was once a no-no look is coming back into fashion bigtime, not least thanks to a book by Jack Carlson called Rowing Blazers. His picture-rich book explores and exposes the blazers worn by oarsmen and sailors around the world. Carlson has no small degree of authority in this area- he himself a rower who’s formerly represented Oxford University in the annual Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race. The book is a trailblazer (sorry about that pun) for his soon to be launched eponymous menswear line and shows the great and the good and the not so well known sporting the height of preppy sartorial elegance, the blazer.
The book takes in many countries, the Netherlands, the States, the UK, South Africa and New Zealand, but binds together these far-flung lands through the images of rowers wearing blazers in their own styles. Sir Steve Redgrave and Cameron & Tyler Winklevoss (who you might remember as the twins from The Social Network) are included. The book is a celebration of the blazer as a statement of clean-cut clothing design, and also a way of life. Carlson argues that the blazer is at its heart totally American. Classic US sportswear. Timeless and cool. While many fashion lines rise and fall, the blazer continues to be a constant and one feels that his message is that each and every one of us should have at least one blazer in our wardrobes.
The book features some photos of English rowing teams, and it is striking just how natural and comfortable the rowers look. It sometimes seems as though blue-blooded Englishmen were born in a blazer! In Holland we discover that blazers, sometimes fifty or more years old, are passed down within the clubs until they are literally threadbare!
In fact I predict that blazers will make a stunning comeback (although they never really went away) in 2014-5. I think we will see them being worn as hip-hop street fashion matched with trainers, skinny jeans and even headscarves. It shouldn’t take urban fashionistas long to realise that a blazer is a stunning street statement, be it navy blue, black, maroon, plain or striped. There was a time when blazers were the exclusive preserve of those who were (or pretended to be) landed gentry, rowers or Oxford or Cambridge “toffs”. But not any more I predict. I think that the clean cut lines of the blazer plus the quality material and not least of all the excellent gold or silver buttons will become sought after street-wear for young and old alike. So start searching for your statement blazer right away before everyone on the block is sporting them and you’ll be accused of lamely following fashion rather than headlining it!
Rowing Blazers, by Jack Carlson, published by Thames & Hudson is available now. £34.95.

Paris Fashion Week

Fashion week in Paris has always been a highly anticipated and highly charged number of days. This year we were treated to some great outfits worn with aplomb by models and actresses alike. Kristen Stewart showed herself to be an edgy fashionista as she debuted a newly cropped and dyed hair do which almost drew as much attention as her daring white mesh harem pants and crop top.
Jennifer Lawrence, the current face of Miss Dior, resembled some sort of classicalbronzed goddess in a white knee-length dress featuring a square boxy neckline and delicate straps that revealed a whole lot of back and a bit of boob on the side. She certainly turned heads!
Fans of The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev wowed the audience in a “dare-to-bare” navy minidress and matching coat. Sexy strappy black heels and a high topknot accented the look and completed a sexy yet sophisticated presentation.
Chloe Grace Moretz has her film If I Stay topping the movie charts and she showed that she is not only a start of the silver screen, but also a silver star of the runway. She appeared at Paris Fashion Week in a head-to-toe metallic ensemble. Must be a pain going through airport security! Talking of metallic outfits,Charlize Theron the long-time face of Dior sat in the front row with beau Sean Penn and sported a dazzling metallic gold dress.
Paris Fashion week wouldn’t have been the same without J-Lo. It looked like she couldn’t decide between a dress and a jumpsuit so she kind of wore both! The singer’s white number was part gown, part one piece and it’s been generating a lot of fashion buzz and may even have started a brand new clothes line.
But I overheard someone asking how Paris had become, arguably, the centre of the fashion universe. Fashion has always been an important part of France’s cultural life and society, and the French are generally well known for being well-dressed. Haute couture, and the “prêt-à-porter”, among others, remain part of traditional French life. When did it all begin?
It began with the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV, when the luxury goods industries in France came increasingly under royal control and the French royal court began to dictate taste and style in Europe at large. Louis XIV popularised and exported the long curly coiffured wig (because he was balding) and this was the beginning of France, and in particular its capital, Paris, establishing itself as a centre of sartorial; elegance and good taste.
Today Paris acts as the centre of the French fashion industry. Along with New York City, London and Milan, the city is considered one of the world’s foremost fashion capitals, housing many premier fashion design houses such as Pierre Cardin, Céline, Chanel, Chloe, Dior, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermès, Lanvin, Rochas, Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent.
However it is worth noting that some other French cities, including Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Lille, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, and Nice, host important luxury districts and avenues. It’s not just Paris, but there’s no denying Paris Fashion Week is one of the biggest events in the world of fashion.

The Key Autumn/Winter Trends You Should Invest In Now

With the erratic British weather signaling that autumn is well on its way, there is no better time to be a step ahead of the crowd and start to look at what the Autumn/Winter fashion season has in store for us. While the colder weather might trigger a doom and gloom response in most of us, you can at least be happy in knowing that us Brits do dress better in colder weather and you now have the opportunity to bring out all your favourite coats and boots again.

Soon shops will be receiving their first delivery of the AW14 ranges and so now is the time to become familiar with all of the seasons biggest trends.

The 60s Are Back
By now you should have recognised that every season has its signature decade and this AW14 is no different. Runways have been channeling the vibes of 60s mods, think along the lines of structured A-line shifts, knee-high boots and polo necks. For some style pointers look no further than Louis Vuitton and Gucci, who both showed glamorous A-lines.

Fairy Tale Fashion
Surprisingly enough some of the biggest fashion houses took their inspiration from traditional fairy tales, although fortunately the likes of Dolce &Gabbana decided on more of a dark and unctuous take. Expect to see the likes of large furs, thick ruby coats inspired by the likes of Red Riding Hood and embellished capes.

If you want to be first onto this trend then a hooded cape is your best bet without risking falling into the pages of an actual fairytale. They make for a stylish and comfortable trend that will have you skipping through forests and recapturing your childhoods.

Normcore Is In
For anyone not familiar with normcore, it is a style that is also referred to as ‘perfectly boring’, except now it has had a high fashion makeover. This isn’t to say the clothing is actually boring but rather that it is a focus on the basics, think along the lines of beautifully tailored items that use a lot of grey, black and navy. They may be called perfectly boring but this trend is an opportunity to brush up on your basics and get the best possible quality staples for your wardrobe.

Celebrating Artists
Some fashion houses such as Burberry aren’t content with following the masses and actually create trends all on their own. This season is no different as Christopher Bailey and his team has decided to celebrate the boho artists and writers of the 1920s, also known as the Bloomsbury Set.

If you want in on this trend then consider incorporating a bit of whimsy into your wardrobe with watercolour inspired scarves, shearling jackets and drawstring ankle boots.

‘Fast-Food’ Fashion
A polar opposite to Burberry’s romanticism is Karl Lagerfeld’s hard-edged consumerism and supermarket chic-themed show. The catwalk for this trend was transformed into one of the most stylish supermarkets we’ve ever seen and you’ve no doubt seen the likes of Cara Delevigne and Rihanna having fun in the aisles. As for the clothes themselves you’re likely to see a continuing trend of crop tops, stylish track pants and trainers.
